Pornography Actresses and the Damaged Goods Hypothesis

Pornography Actresses and the Damaged Goods Hypothesis

So I was just looking through my facebook feed and I bumped into this incredibly interesting study on the self-esteem and quality of life of professional pornography actresses. I’m not incredibly knowledgeable about porn myself, but I’m (obviously, I think) interested in sexuality, and it’s always pissed me off when I’ve heard women go off on rants about how exploitative the porn industry is, and how it destroys women’s lives. They never have any examples to substantiate their claims, and I think it’s rather ridiculous to attack porn purely on the basis of your own personal morality. Call me crazy, but I think perceived moral superiority putting down an alternative sexual lifestyle is a threat to more than just the porn industry.

Anyway, this study found that women who work as professional porn actresses actually have higher self-esteem than a comparative sample of women, that they have the same rates of instances of Childhood Sexual Abuse as anyone else, that they’re more cautious about STDs, that they’re more likely to have tried drugs than their comparative sample (but the only drug that they’re more likely to consistently use is marijuana), and many other interesting things.

Also, porn actresses are more likely to be bisexual ;)
